Scrutineer

As a scrutineer you are responsible for carrying out safety checks on competition vehicles.

This involves checking seats, harnesses, personal safety equipment, roll cages and the general vehicle safety and communicate any irregularities to competitors.

This is an important role as you are helping to ensure the safety of vehicles and competitors. You will likely work in small teams on event under the supervision of a more senior scrutineer.

Eligibility Scrutineer

Eligibility scrutineers are responsible for ensuring a level playing field for all competitors by checking a vehicles compliance with the technical regulations.

This involves measuring and checking mechanical components to ensure that competitors are not gaining an unfair advantage. This could include checking engine capacities, transmission systems, suspension components, vehicle weight and ride heights.

Environmental Scrutineer

An environmental scrutineer carries out checks to control the environmental impact of motorsport.

Primarily, this is measuring sound levels to ensure they comply with the regulatory noise limits. They may also be required to advise competitors on their duties to minimise environmental damage (e.g. How to clean up and dispose of oil spillages).

Once graduated as a trainee, you can opt to become an environmental scrutineer and/or a scrutineer (many people do both as it makes them more rounded scrutineers).

Trainee Scrutineer

The Trainee Scrutineer role is the first step on the scrutineering pathway.

You must be 16 years or over to get started and will be allocated a mentor to support you through your modular training.

Initially you will observe qualified scrutineers and assist them in their duties, checking competition vehicles and drivers safety equipment. As you gain experience and confidence you will become increasingly more hands on in the role.

It will take at least 12 months and experience at a range of events in order to
complete your training and progress to the full scrutineer role.
