As with any new passion, the world of karting comes with it’s own phrases and sayings. Get to grips with some of the basics below:
ARKS – An abbreviation for the Association of Racing Kart Schools. This can also also refer to the ‘ARKS Test’ aka the novice driver training course which must be completed before obtaining a karting competition licence.
Dummy Grid – This is an assembly area where drivers are called to take their karts to in preparation for the next on track activity. For a race, the drivers are lined up on the dummy grid in their starting order. In practice sessions, there is no set order for where drivers should place their karts.
Full Mag – A fully magnesium constructed wheel which is very lightweight and strong in construction.
Half Mag – A specific type of wheel which uses a half magnesium style construction for improved weight reduction and strength.
Inters – This is an abbreviated term for a treaded intermediate tyre, typically used when the track conditions are in-between fully wet and fully dry.
Tram Lines – Not to be confused with a form of public transport, tram lines in karting refers to the starting procedure for a kart race. As most races use a two-by-two rolling start, there are lines painted at the start line to ensure that both lines of drivers are kept neatly separated at the start of a race.
Transponder – A timing device attached to your vehicle that records your times as you pass sensors in the track. You can purchase your own or loan these from timekeepers at the event.
