The Hill Climb Pathway

Production Class

The easiest way to get involved in Hill Climbing is to use a standard production car. You will find that most hill climb events across the country will feature classes for Standard Cars or Road Cars. The Standard Car class is for vehicles with no performance modifications manufactured after 1st January 2000 and be under 2 litres engine capacity. The Road Car classes are for other production cars which don’t fit within the Standard Car class. These classes are excellent places to start your Hill Climb journey.

However, before you can take to the hills, you will need to obtain an RS Inter Club licence. The application form for this licence is included in the Motorsport UK Racing Starter Pack.

Once you have your licence, start off by doing a couple of events at your local hill climb venue so that you become more familiar with the order of the day. It is also a good idea to build your speed up slowly so that you can gain confidence in your own ability as well as that of the car.

The other benefit of running in a production car is that it provides a brilliant way to get into motorsport without the need to spend a lot of money on acquiring and preparing a car specifically for competing.

There is also the option of instruction with a local AHASS Instructor (Association of Hill Climb and Sprint Schools). This is particularly useful as some time with an instructor will give you some helpful insights and get you up to speed.

Club Championship

With a few events under your belt and the confidence gained through experience, the next step is to compete in a club championship. You can find a list of hill climb clubs on the Motorsport UK Club Finder.

Most clubs will run a championship for each of the car classes which feature at their events. The points scored as a result of your finishing position at each event held throughout the year will be totalled up at the end of the season to determine your overall finishing position.

Not only does this give you something to aim for, but it also helps you to see how compare to the other drivers in your class.

Once you have completed a championship in your production car, you may want to look at moving to a different class which features a more modified vehicle or specific competition car such as a single seater. From here, you can continue to compete in the various championships and any other events that you might want to enter too.

National Championship

The highest level of Hill Climb competition is the British Hill Climb Championship. This national championship features the best drivers and cars from around the country, all competing to become the coveted British Champion in their respective class.

As the championship is hosted at a national level, each round will take place at a different venue around the country, putting the drivers skills to the test on a variety of different courses.

Due to the nature of this championship, it is best to have gained some valuable hill climb experience before looking to contest any of the rounds.
