The Rallycross Pathway

Club Rallycross

Once you feel ready to make the jump into the world of rallycross, the best place to start is to check out the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship or Lydden Hill Motorsport Club by visiting an event at a venue that is most local to you.

This way you can get a feel for how the events are run, what the action is like on track and look to find a particular class that you would be interested in entering. Taking the time to do some research is a great way of making sure that you have the information you need when it comes to either purchasing or building a car of your own.

Most rallycross championships will feature various classes which cater for production based cars of varying engine size, through to more modified cars and those specially designed for rallycross. There will also be separate classes for 2WD and 4WD vehicles, so you won’t be at a disadvantage to your competitors if your car has a different drivetrain.

Club rallycross is a great way to become more familiar with how the sport works but also offers you the opportunity to develop your car if you wanted to move into a different class to gain more experience.

In order to get started in club rallycross, you will need to first obtain a Motorsport UK RS Interclub licence. You will then need to ensure that you have the correct safety equipment such as a helmet, fireproof overalls, gloves and boots. You will also need to wear an FHR device which helps to protect your neck in the event of an accident.

British Rallycross Championship

The top tier of rallycross is the British Rallycross Championship. This is a national competition which features the prestigious title of British Champion. Those who compete in this championship will typically have many years of rallycross experience under their belt already. Like club Rallycross events, there are various classes available ranging from specialist buggies through to highly modified two-wheel drive cars and the pinnacle of the sport, Supercars. These are flame spitting, 600bhp monsters with incredible acceleration, not for the feint hearted!

While it may be possible for newcomers to race in a British Rallycross Championship supporting series, as this is a national championship, it is generally not suitable for a beginner to jump straight into. It is better to spend some time driving in the clubman level events to gain experience first.
